Second Prize to Our Student from IEEE GRSS

Our master’s student Fatma Elik won the second prize in “The Earth at Risk Image Contest” organized by IEEE GRSS with her scientific study on Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes.

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, Satellite Communication and Remote Sensing Program master’s student Fatma Elik received the second prize with her scientific study on February 6 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in “The Earth at Risk Image Contest” organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE GRSS) with the participation of 15 countries.

Elik’s award-winning study aiming to provide a holistic overview of earthquake activity and its aftermath in Kahramanmaraş, prepared from her master’s thesis entitled “Earthquake damage detection with satellite imagery and deep learning approaches: A case study of the february 2023, Kahramanmaraş, Turkey earthquake sequence” supervised by Geomatics Engineering Department faculty member Prof. Dr. Elif Sertel, presents a map showcasing earthquake-prone zones, damage assessment points, building footprints and the extent of assessed damage.
