Istanbul Technical University continues to host sustainable projects to transform the future. The 8th Istanbul Carbon Summit, organized by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SPCA) with the main support of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and Istanbul Technical University (ITU), was held this year with the title “Climate Resilient Industry, Strong Türkiye”. The stakeholders, who came together on May 2, 2023 at Ayazağa Campus, the registered green campus of ITU, also determined the Carbon Heroes of the year at the Carbon Summit, the first and only event in its field.

“Sustainability” is an important part of ITU

Delivering the opening speech of the Summit, our Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Şule Itır Satoğlu touched upon ITU’s pioneering work in the field of climate issues and sustainability, and said, “As Istanbul Technical University, we continue to play a leading and guiding role in the fields of environment, climate issues and sustainability, as in many other fields.” ITU faculty member and SPCA President Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu said: “We have all experienced a major disaster centered at Kahramanmaraş. This disaster was a natural disaster and we are trying to pull our people and our country out of this disaster. And then there is the climate change disaster we have caused, which we have experienced with greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change emerges as a continuous disaster that triggers other disasters. At this summit, we will have the opportunity to talk about many issues from carbon emissions to climate change. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the stakeholders participating in the summit.”

Carbon Heroes

At the end of the Carbon Summit, Low Carbon Heroes awards, which evaluate the greenhouse gas reduction achievements of companies in the field of sustainability management, reflected in their social and governance indicators, especially environmental indicators, found their owners this year as well. Istanbul Carbon Summit also gives the Little Carbon Hero awards every year in order to promote a “culture of sustainability” among children. Koç High School Social and Technological Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creativity Club (K-STEIC) was declared this year’s “Little Carbon Hero”.
