Cooperation Protocol Signed Between İTÜ and Turkish Chamber of Shipping

Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) and Turkish Chamber of Shipping (TCS) started an important cooperation in the field of maritime. The cooperation protocol involves renewal, maintenance, repair and restoration of the applied training pool at İTÜ Maritime Faculty.

A cooperation protocolfor the repair, restoration and renewal of İTÜ Maritime Faculty’s pool buildingwas signed between Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) and Turkish Chamber of Shipping (TCS). The cooperation protocol was signed by İTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu and Turkish Chamber of Shipping Chairman Tamer Kıran.

The ceremony held at İTÜ Maritime Faculty was attended by İTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu, Turkish Chamber of Shipping Chairman Tamer Kıran, İTÜ Maritime Faculty’s Dean Prof. Dr. Oğuz Salim Söğüt, academicians, and representatives of the maritime sector.

“İTÜ will continueto contribute to the maritime sector in terms of raising human resources and R&D”

At the ceremony, İTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu stated that Turkish Chamber of Shipping is one of the leadingpartners of the university and thanked them for their support to the faculty. Koyuncu said that İTÜ has been giving and will continue to give all kinds of support to the sector in terms of raising human resources and R&D and proceeded as follows: “Istanbul Technical University is a strong educational institution with a history of nearly two and a half centuries of activities in diverse technicalfields. Our university that made major contributions to our country’s technology, economy and professional experience as well as its accumulationof knowledge, now has become the definer of many professions, so to speak. The experience we have acquired in the past guides us in many activities we carry out.For we aim to become the world’s best educational institution in education, R&D, innovation, digitalization, in short, in almost all fields that come into contact with technology. This way, we are moving ahead at full speed towards our 250thyear with a view tokeeping our vision perpetual with modern education and training principles. Our greatest aim is to be a university that ‘leavesmarks on the road’, if I may say so. Today I would like to thank İTÜ and TCS families who gathered here for a beneficial job and who contribute to our country’s future.May the protocol we sign be beneficial. May our cooperation be everlasting.”

“4 million TL donation from TCS to İTÜ”

Turkish Chamber of Shipping Chairman Tamer Kıran said regarding the protocol, “With its Maritime Faculty and Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences, İTÜ is one of the leading educational institutions for our sector. Therefore, as the Board of Directors of Turkish

Chamber of Shipping, we pondered how we can do more for our sector and decided to give our support to meet İTÜMaritime Faculty’s needs.” Kıran expressed that they will donate 4 million TL according to the protocol and that renewal, maintenance and repair work of the applied training pool will be completed and the pool will enter into service as soon as possible so as to answer the standards specified in “Seafarers and Maritime Pilots Training and Examination Directive”.


İTÜ Maritime Faculty’s Dean Prof. Dr. Oğuz Salim Söğüt informed the attendeesabout the trainings pursued at the pool. He stated that besides “Applied training of safety at sea and basic swimming skill courses” and “application modules of personal life saving techniques at sea STCW trainers training certificate programs” to students of İTÜ-SUNY joint diploma and İTÜ-TRNCprograms, applied training of students of schools under the Ministry of National Education with protocols made in line with the capacity plan and free swimming activities of students and academic and administrative staff are being carried out.

The program ended with the attendees’ visit to the training pool.
