About the methodology of the ranking

The ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects aims to evaluate universities’ performance in specific academic subjects, focusing on academic visibility and research output. By examining each university’s achievements across different disciplines, it provides rankings in specialized academic fields.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) includes 57 subjects grouped under 5 fields (natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences). Approximately 2,000 universities from around 100 countries and regions are listed each year.

Subject rankings are determined by threshold publication numbers, which vary annually. The publication threshold is set separately for each subject.

Indicators are grouped under the categories of World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration. For the 2026 ranking, publications from the 2021–2025 period were examined using bibliometric data from the Web of Science and InCites.
