Times Higher Education (THE), one of the world’s most respected academic ranking organizations, has announced the results of the 2026 THE Asia University Rankings. Istanbul Technical University (ITU) ranked 97th among 929 universities in Asia. Despite the increase in the number of higher education institutions included in the evaluation, ITU has maintained the position it held in the region last year.
Ranking methodology
THE Asia University Rankings use performance indicators across five areas, each with different weights. In the 2026 THE Asia University Rankings, universities are evaluated based on Research Quality (30%), Research Environment (28%), Teaching (24.5%), Industry (10%), and International Outlook (7.5). There are 18 performance indicators distributed across these five areas.
The THE Asia University Rankings assess research‑intensive universities using a methodological framework similar to that of the THE World University Rankings. Indicator weightings vary according to the priorities of higher education institutions in Asia. The rankings provide insight into universities’ academic and physical infrastructure, their capacity to deliver quality education, and their performance in securing research funding and producing scientific publications. In addition, the extent to which research outputs are used within the scientific community, their contribution to regional economic development, and universities’ ability to attract foreign researchers are also evaluated.

ITU’s responsibility‑ and impact‑focused collaborations in Asia
In recent years, ITU has continued to deepen its academic cooperation with Asian countries. The university has assumed founding roles in the Türkiye–Azerbaijan University (TAU) and the International Turkic States University (ITSU) in Uzbekistan. Within the framework of the “on‑campus co‑achievement laboratories” concept, ITU has established joint laboratories with Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing Tech University, and Shanghai Maritime University.
