Istanbul Technical University (ITU) continues to achieve successful results with its vision of being a Research University Focused on Responsibility and Impact. According to the results of the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025, ITU ranked 1st in Türkiye in 6 subjects. This ranking focuses on universities’ performance in specific academic subjects. It highlights institutions with particular expertise or success in those subjects. Compared to last year, the number of subjects in which our university ranked first has increased from 5 to 6.

ITU was ranked in a total of 7 subjects in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025. Our university ranked first among Turkish universities in Marine/Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, Food Science & Technology, Oceanography, Chemical Engineering, and Earth Sciences. It ranked third in Telecommunication Engineering.

The results of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which focuses on research, once again demonstrated that ITU is a competitive research university that generates global impact through its scientific studies.

ITU was declared the first research university in Türkiye in 2017 and has been classified in the A1 group by CoHE, which includes universities at the highest level among “Research Universities.” The classification of research universities is made by taking into account various criteria such as research capacity, research quality, international collaborations, number of projects, academic publications, patents, and collaborations with industry.

In addition to its successful position in Türkiye, our university also presented a proud picture globally in the subjects in which it was ranked in the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025. ITU rose three places compared to last year to rank 30th globally in Marine/Ocean Engineering. In the subject of Civil Engineering, it climbed from the 151-200 range to the 51-75 range.

ITU maintained its rank in the 151-200 range globally in Food Science & Technology and Oceanography. It was ranked in the 201-300 range in Chemical Engineering.

Our university maintained its position in the 301–400 range in Earth Sciences, the same range it held last year. It was also placed in the same 301–400 range in Telecommunication Engineering. ITU was thus included in this year’s ranking in the field of Telecommunication Engineering, a subject in which it was not listed last year.

ITU, which is a leading institution with a strong research infrastructure and ranks 30th in Marine/Ocean Engineering, continues to develop and generate impact through its Faculty of Maritime and Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. Türkiye’s first “Large Cavitation Tunnel and Maneuvering Test System” (KATMANSİS) is located in our Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. Our Faculty of Maritime is further strengthening its teaching infrastructure across a wide range, from the Denizatı Training Building to the Simulator Units. Furthermore, the “ BRIDGE-IAB” and “ Ship Recycling Risk Framework for Türkiye’s Safe & Sustainable Approach” projects were recently launched at our faculty.

ITU ranked first in Türkiye in 5 subjects in GRAS 2024

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) was ranked in a total of 7 subjects in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2024. Among these subjects included Marine/Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, Food Science and Technology, Oceanography, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Textile Science and Engineering. ITU successfully secured 1st place in Türkiye in Marine/Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, Oceanography, Chemistry, and Earth Sciences. Furthermore, it achieved 2nd place nationally in both Food Science and Technology and Textile Science and Engineering.

In the 2024 global rankings, our university attained remarkable success, ranking 33rd in Marine/Ocean Engineering and 36th in Textile Science and Engineering. ITU was also placed in the 151-200 range in three subjects (Civil Engineering, Oceanography, and Food Science and Technology), and in the 401-500 range in both Earth Sciences and Chemistry.

About the methodology of the ranking

The academic visibility- and output-focused ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects aims to evaluate the performance of universities in specific academic subjects. By examining the achievements of each university in different disciplines provides a ranking in specific academic subjects.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) includes 57 subjects under 5 fields (natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences). Approximately 2,000 universities from around 100 countries and regions are listed in the ranking each year.

Subject rankings are determined by threshold publication numbers that change from year to year. The publication threshold value is determined separately for each subject.

The indicators are grouped into the categories of “World-Class Faculty,” “World-Class Output,” “High-Quality Research,” “Research Impact,” and “International Collaboration.” The Ranking of Academic Subjects examines publications in the 2020-2024 period using bibliometric data from the Web of Science and InCites.
