18th World Conference on Anaerobic Digestion, organized jointly by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), MEM-TEK National Research Center on Membrane Technologies, and International Water Association (IWA), was held for the first time in Istanbul this year on June 2-6, 2024, with the theme “bridging waste to value through anaerobic digestion”.
In the opening session of the conference, which brought together world academics from 43 different countries, our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu pointed out that leaving a green future for future generations is possible by developing an understanding of engineering and industry that is compatible with ecology, and said the following:
“As Istanbul Technical University, which is Türkiye’s oldest engineering education institution, we closely follow the scientific studies conducted around the world in the field of eco-friendly engineering and take responsibility for a future at peace with nature. Our university attracts attention as one of the higher education institutions with the most sustainable campus areas worldwide, and contributes to global science with the environmentally friendly technology studies it supports.”
At the international conference, which hosted field experts for five days, there were presentations on various topics ranging from microbial diversity in anaerobic processes to treatment of industrial and agricultural waste; from modeling, optimization, instrumentation and control of anaerobic processes to water, sanitation and hygiene concerns in resource-constrained communities.
