Prof. Dr. Güven Önal was Sent off on His Last Journey
Faculty of Mines Retired Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Güven Önal was sent off on his last journey on April 2, 2024 after a ceremony at ITU Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center attended by his loved ones, colleagues, and students.

On March 31, 2024, our retired faculty member Prof. Dr. Güven Önal was sent off on his final journey with a ceremony held at Istanbul Technical University. Our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu, our Vice-Rectors, academics, and students as well as the family members of the deceased attended the ceremony held for Prof. Dr. Önal, who is one of the important values raised by ITU in the field of mines and mineral processing and a doyen of Turkish mining.
In a short speech at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Önal’s son touched upon his father’s great role in the development of mining in Türkiye and emphasized that Prof. Dr. Önal’s inexhaustible scientific and technical enthusiasm will set an example for young scientists.
After the funeral ceremony, Prof. Dr. Güven Önal was interred at Çengelköy Cemetery following the noon prayer at Levent Afet Yolal Mosque.
About Prof. Dr. Güven Önal
Prof. Dr. Güven Önal completed his undergraduate education at ITU Faculty of Mines in 1963 and started working as an assistant in the Department of Mineral Processing the same year. After completing his PhD in 1970, he conducted research at Imperial College in UK between 1970-72. Between 1979 and 1981, he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship and conducted research at the Technical University of Berlin. He became a full professor in 1981, and he produced a total of 36 works in Turkish and foreign languages. He also has over 450 scientific and technological publications, including book chapters and edited books.
Prof. Dr. Önal, who has been involved in more than 200 technological research and studies as executor and manager, had industrial activities such as project coordination and consultancy and efforts on university-industry cooperation.
Prof. Dr. Önal was elected as a member of the Ecology and Environment Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences, and won the University of Pittsburgh Science Award in 2010. He was awarded the title of “honorary professor” by the Technical University of Baia-Mare in Romania. Prof. Dr. Önal was serving as a member of the Scientific and Executive Committee of the International Mineral Processing Congress, president of Balkan Mineral Processing Science and Technology Academy, member of Pittsburgh Coal Congress Organizing Committee, and president of Balkan Mineral Processing Congress Organizing Committee.
