2023 ITU Awards were Presented in a Spectacular Ceremony

ITU Awards, which aim to support successful scientific studies and academic activities that bring added value to our country, were presented for the second time in a ceremony held at ITU Ayazağa Campus Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center on March 8, 2024.

Istanbul Technical University Awards, organized for the second time this year and aiming to encourage scientific studies that stand out with their contribution to social life, were presented in a spectacular ceremony held at ITU Ayazağa Campus, Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center on March 8, 2024. This year’s award ceremony was held with the theme of “Earth Sciences,” and the “Special Award” of the year was dedicated to the memory of ITU academic Prof. Dr. İhsan Ketin, who discovered the Northern Fault Line and passed away in 1995.

ITU Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu made the following remarks in the opening speech of the ceremony: “Rewarding innovations and achievements has a very important place in the research and service culture of Istanbul Technical University. The reflections of this support on our students and academics, whose work we have rewarded on various occasions as ITU, have been extremely positive and encouraging. We started such a beautiful award tradition alongside many other activities in 2023, when we celebrated our 250th anniversary as the Technical University.”

At the ceremony night, which attracted great interest, as a result of meticulous evaluation, 15 distinguished scientists were rewarded in 10 different categories in the fields of engineering sciences and basic sciences, as well as in the fields of architecture, art and social sciences for their significant contributions to the scientific community and the technical knowledge of our country with their qualified academic studies.

Prof. Dr. İhsan Ketin Special Award in the Field of Earth Sciences was given to Prof. Dr. Aral Okay

The ceremony witnessed emotional moments when this year’s “Special Award” in memory of Prof. Dr. İhsan Ketin was given to Prof. Dr. Aral Okay, ITU Eurasian Institute of Earth Sciences faculty member who passed away in November 2023. Prof. Dr. Okay wrote hundreds of articles throughout his academic career, trained many students, and achieved international success with his academic studies in the field of geological engineering.

Service Award

This year’s “Service Award” was presented to Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu, a graduate of ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering and former Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs, who stands out with his contributions to our country and adds value to both the academic community and our university with his services. Prof. Dr. Eroğlu is known for his contributions to the establishment of ITU Department of Environmental Engineering in 1978 and his scientific studies in the fields of water supply and wastewater treatment.
