Our research assistant İbrahim Yıldırım received an award in the conference he attended on behalf of the department with his publication on physical channel modeling for intelligent surface-empowered communication scenarios prepared together with his advisor Koç University faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Başar.

Technological approaches to (6G) wireless networks

Commenting on his award-winning publication, İbrahim Yıldırım said, “The unprecedented increase in data traffic in recent years led researchers to discover new horizons beyond the current paradigms. Although many innovative ideas such as virtual reality, autonomous vehicles and telemedicine were introduced with fifth generation (5G) wireless networks, engineers and researchers have already started to lay the foundations of sixth generation (6G) wireless networks and develop innovative solutions. To meet the requirements that increase day by day, the idea of placing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces that can control and manipulate the wireless propagation environment through software-controlled reflections into communication environments was proposed. This quite new and promising technology managed to attract the attention of both academicians and sector employees worldwide. Despite this interest, there is still a long way to go in order to develop this technology and make it ready for use by implementing it physically. Together with my advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul Başar, we accelerated our work on physical channel modeling for intelligent surface-empowered communication scenarios to contribute to the realization of this promising technology. Considering the possible communication scenarios of which these surfaces are a part, we made our open source channel modeling methodology and software available to researchers. Being awarded such a prize by the IEEE LatinCOM Conference where we published our first results made us very happy and encouraged us to accelerate our current research activities.”
