Proud Rise in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 from ITU!
Istanbul Technical University has achieved significant success by rising from 95th to 79th place in the "Engineering and Technology" category in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 compared to last year and ranked 1st in our country. Our university has made advancements in major fields. Globally, ITU ranked 40th in "Petroleum Engineering", 44th in "Mining/Mineral Engineering", and within the range of 51-100 in "Architecture/Built Environment".

Istanbul Technical University (ITU), in line with its vision of being a research university focused on responsibility and impact, continues its scientific studies with its students and academics. As a result, it continues to advance its position in academic rankings, as evidenced by the results announced by distinguished international ranking organizations.
According to the 2025 results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, announced annually by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), our university has shown success in all evaluated areas. The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject analyzed 5,203 universities worldwide, with 1,747 ranked in 55 different fields. ITU was analyzed in 28 fields and participated in the ranking with 21 fields (the highest number of fields it has ranked into date).
ITU ranked in the top 100 in the world in 3 different fields. The number of fields in which our university is ranked within the top 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 globally also increased compared to last year. ITU became the most ranked university from Türkiye in the top 100 of the subject rankings.
Proud rise of ITU
According to the 2024 results, our university has risen in all fields in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. ITU has moved from 95th to 79th place in "Engineering and Technology," from 275th to 182nd in "Natural Sciences," from 309th to 239th in "Arts and Humanities," and from 354th to 308th in "Social Sciences and Management." ITU ranked 1st in Türkiye in the "Engineering and Technology" category.
Impressive achievements in "Engineering and Technology" and "Natural Sciences" subfields
The rankings of our university in the engineering subfields have changed as follows: ITU rose from 41st to 40th in "Petroleum Engineering," from the range of 51-70 to 44th in "Mining/Mineral Engineering," and from 138th to 133rd in "Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering."
ITU maintained its positions in "Engineering and Technology" from last year, remaining in the range of 101-150 in "Civil and Structural Engineering" and 151-200 in "Chemical Engineering." ITU ranked within the range of 151-200 in "Electrical and Electronic Engineering" and within the range of 201-250 in "Computer Science and Information Systems."
Our university moved from the range of 101-150 to 51-100 in "Architecture/Built Environment" under the "Arts and Humanities" category. Additionally, for the first time this year, ITU ranked within the range of 151-200 in "Art and Design" under the same category.
In the "Natural Sciences" category, ITU rose from the range of 201-250 to 151-200 in "Earth and Marine Sciences" and from 201-240 to 151-200 in "Geology" and "Geophysics" subfields. ITU maintained its positions in the subfields of "Materials Science" (151-200) and "Chemistry" (251-300). ITU also rose from the range of 251-300 to 201-250 in "Environmental Sciences" and "Mathematics," and from 351-400 to 301-350 in "Physics and Astronomy."
Our university ranked for the first time in "Statistics and Operational Research" under the "Social Sciences and Management" category, placing within the range of 201-250, and maintained its positions in the subfields of "Business and Management Studies" (301-350) and "Economics and Econometrics" (401-450).
In the subfield of "Biological Sciences" under the Life Sciences and Medicine category, ITU rose from 601-650 last year to 551-600.
QS World University Rankings by Subject
In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, h-index, and international research network indicators are used with varying weights. The influence of these indicators differs across 5 broad subject areas and 55 narrow subject areas. The number of universities applying in each subject varies, and universities falling below certain threshold values are not included in the rankings. These threshold values account for the difference between the number of universities analyzed and the number of universities included in the rankings. According to these thresholds, between 20 and 850 universities were included in the subfields of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025.
