Istanbul Technical University (ITU) continues to achieve successful results in academic rankings with the work of its faculty members and students with the aim of learning and achieving together. ITU ranked 1st in Türkiye in five fields according to the results of ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2024, which takes into account the success of universities in certain academic subjects and aims to highlight institutions with more expertise or success in those subjects.
ITU was ranked in a total of 7 subjects in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2024. Our university ranked 1st in Türkiye in Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, Marine/Ocean Engineering, Oceanography, and Chemistry subjects. ITU ranked 2nd in Food Science & Technology and Textile Science and Engineering subjects.
The results of ITU's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which focuses heavily on research, reflect its confident progress towards becoming a research university that can compete globally. Our university has been classified as a research university in the A1 group by CoHE. This category includes universities at the highest level among "Research Universities". Research universities are ranked by taking into consideration criteria such as research capacity, research quality, international collaborations, number of projects, academic publications, patents, and collaborations with industry.
Among the top 50 in the world in Ship/Ocean Engineering and Textile Science and Engineering fields
Our university also attracted attention in international rankings. Being ranked 33rd globally in Marine/Ocean Engineering and 36th in Textile Science and Engineering, ITU was also ranked between 151-200 in Civil Engineering, Food Science and Technology, and Oceanography fields.
Our university stood out as its 33rd-place success in the subject of Marine/Ocean Engineering. ITU was established 251 years ago with the aim of training qualified people in the field of maritime and has been in a leading position in Türkiye with its Faculty of Maritime and the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. ITU has a strong research infrastructure focused on the sea. Türkiye’s first "Large Cavitation Tunnel and Maneuvering Experiment System" (KATMANSIS) was opened in 2021 at ITU Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. ITU Faculty of Maritime New Simulator Units were put into service in 2023. Our university plays an important international role in the development of propulsion and manoeuvring systems with projects such as GATERS supported by Horizon Europe.
ITU, which is ranked 36th in the field of Textile Science and Engineering, continues to produce qualified graduates who develop Turkish textile and apparel manufacturing technologies, design new products to provide new opportunities in international markets and contribute to fashion-brand formation and are well-versed in textile technology and who carry out marketing operations in exports, at the Faculty of Textile Technologies and Design, which is relatively young compared to its long-established history. ITU has strong collaborations with the textile industry. In addition, scientists at the faculty receive support from the Horizon Europe Program in research areas such as textile-based robotic structures with projects such as “TEXWEAROTS”.
About the methodology of the ranking
Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) ranks universities in specific academic subjects by examining the achievements of each university in different disciplines. There are 55 subjects under 5 main headings in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). These headings include various branches such as engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, medicine and social sciences. In this context, when the rankings are examined, it is aimed to help determine the best institutions in a particular subject. It was stated that 1900 universities from 96 countries and regions were listed in the rankings announced in 2024.
Subject rankings are determined by threshold publication numbers that change from year to year. The publication threshold value is determined separately for each subject.
In 2024, the methodology and indicators were expanded. The indicators were grouped into the categories of “World-Class Faculty”, “World-Class Output”, “High-Quality Research”, “Research Impact”, and “International Collaboration”. The Academic Excellence Survey results were taken into account as the data source in the new indicators added in 2024 and the award indicator. Ranking of Academic Subjects examines publications in the 2019-2023 period using bibliometric data from the Web of Science and InCites databases.
ITU's 2024 ARWU outlook
According to the results of the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which was announced by ShanghaiRanking and evaluated more than 2,500 universities and only 1,000 of them were ranked, ITU was ranked in the 701-800 range, as it was in 2023. According to the ARWU results, which generally highlight universities with medical faculties, ITU was the only university without a medical faculty among the 10 universities from Türkiye included in the rankings.
