ITU Ranks 95th in the World in “Engineering and Technology” Field!

Istanbul Technical University rose to the 95th place in the “Engineering and Technology” field in 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject, while it maintained its leading position in our country. ITU also achieved a great success by ranking 1st in Türkiye in 12 fields while it entered the top 100 in the world in 3 fields and the top 200 in 10 fields in the list in which around 5,000 universities were evaluated.

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) achieved another important international success in 2024, which it declared as the “Year of Global Impact”, with QS World University Rankings by Subject. ITU entered the top 100 in three fields and the top 200 in ten fields in the international academic ranking applied to by around 5,000 universities from 149 regions in the world. Our university ranked first in Türkiye in 12 fields.

Our university rose to the 95th place in the world among 2,156 universities analyzed in the “Engineering and Technology” field from the 108th place it was in last year, continuing its steady rise in this field in the last 4 years.

Rise in “Computer Science and Information Systems” and “Electrical-Electronic Engineering”

ITU rose to the 196th place in the “Computer Science and Information Systems” field from the 201-250 range it was in last year according to the announced results. In the “Electrical-Electronic Engineering” field, it became the 122nd, rising from the 144th place it was in last year. In recent years, ITU made a great breakthrough in these fields, in which global competition is prominent, and continued its steady rise among the best.

ITU continued its rise in international academic rankings, by ranking in the 51-70 range in the “Mineral and Mining Engineering” field, in the 51-100 range in the “Petroleum Engineering” field, in the 101-150 range in the “Architecture/Built Environment” field, in the 101-150 range in the “Civil and Structural Engineering” field and in the 138th place in the “Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering” field. It maintained its position in the 151-200 range it was in last year in the “Chemical Engineering” field.

ITU ranked as follows in other fields: It ranked in 151-200 in “Materials Sciences”, in 201-240 in “Geology”, in 201-240 in “Geophysics”, in 201-250 in “Earth and Marine Sciences”, in 251-300 in “Chemistry”, in 251-300 in “Environmental Sciences”, in 251-300 in “Mathematics”, in the 275th place in the world in the “Natural Sciences” field, while it ranked in the 351-400 range in “Physics and Astronomy”.

ITU entered the rankings in four new fields

ITU entered the list in the 309th place in the “Arts and Humanities” field, in the 354th place in the “Social Sciences and Management” field, in the 301-340 range in the “Modern Languages” field and in the 601-650 range in “Biological Sciences”, in which it was ranked the first time this year. ITU also ranked in the 301-350 range in “Business and Management”, in the 401-450 range in “Economics and Econometrics”.

QS World University Rankings by Subject increases the number of fields it includes in the rankings every year. While only 29 fields were evaluated in 2013, this number rose to 55 in 2024. The number of fields in which ITU was included in these rankings increased with respect to last year and rose from 16 to 20. Thus, while it entered the top 100 in 3 fields in 2024, the number of fields in the top 200 increased from 8 to 10 this year.

Expressing that he follows 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject closely every year, our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu said the following: “In 2024, which we declared as the ‘Year of Global Impact’, we aim to focus particularly on our international achievements and make a global breakthrough to increase our success to higher levels. In this respect, international academic rankings yield important data that make our efforts visible. With our efforts this year, we rose to the 95th place in ‘Engineering and Technology’ field in which we were in the 108th place last year. This ranking which increases steadily from year to year strengthens our place among the best universities as ITU.”

2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject

World University Rankings by Subject announced every year by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranks universities academically according to various parameters.

The evaluation for 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject follows a methodology that evaluates fields based on the indicators of academic reputation, employer reputation, citation number, h-index, and international research network. In addition, number thresholds were set for articles published in the fields.

QS World University Rankings by Subject increases the number of fields it includes in the evaluation every year. For the most recent field ranking in 2024, 4,982 higher education institutions in 149 different regions around the world were examined and 1,559 of them were able to enter the ranking.
