Success of ITU Members in “International Fabric Design Contest”

ITU members achieved great success by taking the top three places in the Futuretech competition within the scope of the 2022 International Fabric Design Futuretex Istanbul organized by the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association (ITHIB).

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) continues on its way with the goal of transforming the future with entrepreneurship, innovation and projects that design the technologies of the future. The projects of ITU members won the first, second and third prizes in the Futuretech competition of Futuretex Istanbul 2022, organized by the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association with the aim of “shaping the fashion in the future”.  The final and award ceremony of the competition was held at Divan Kuruçeşme on 28 November. The finals of the competition, which awards the names that will shape the textile world in the future, were followed by representatives of the textile, fashion and design sectors and a large audience from the world of business and society.

Competition Themes: Biotechnology, Digitalization, Nanotechnology and Smart Textiles

Futuretech, an innovation and idea competition, was held for the first time this year with the theme “Biotech, Digitalization, NanoTech, Smart Textiles”. Celebrating its 250th anniversary with its deep-rooted history, ITU has added a new one to its great successes with its students, graduates, academic and administrative staff in such young and dynamic competitions where new ideas compete.

In the Futuretech competition, Melis Baloğlu, our Ph.D. student from ITU Department of Architecture, won the first prize with her project “The Other Leather”, which she prepared with her project partner Res. Asst. Elif Tekcan from Izmir University of Economics. The project “Biotexcover” presented by Res. Asst. Janset Özdemir from ITU Textile Engineering Department and our laboratory technician Semih Özkür was awarded the second prize. Bilge Koyuncu, who is a graduate of Textile Engineering and holds a master’s degree from the Innovative Technical Textiles program, won the third prize with her project titled “Smart Drysuit”.

At Futuretech, monetary prize of 200 thousand TL was awarded to the first project, 150 thousand TL to the second and 100 thousand TL to the third.
