News: İTÜ Media and Communication Office

At the symposium to be held on October 30, 2021, many international experts on structural and earthquake engineering, seismology, seismotectonics and tsunami will make presentations. The symposium can be followed on the official account of ITU https://www.youtube.com/itu1773.

ITU Disaster Management Institute Director and Faculty of Civil Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Ercan Yüksel, ITU Faculty of Mines Department of Geophysics Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Tuncay Taymaz and ITU Faculty of Architecture Department of Architecture faculty member Prof. Dr. Oğuz Cem Çelik are among the scientists who organize the symposium. The Symposium is dedicated to ITU Secretary General Prof. Dr. İbrahim Demir, who passed away on May 6, 2021.

Leading scientists of the world will assess the current situation in the Aegean Region

Experts estimate that approximately 1 million buildings will be affected at different levels in the major earthquake expected in Istanbul. So, what is the current situation in the expected earthquake scenarios for the Aegean region? How many buildings are expected to be affected by the earthquake? Is a major earthquake in the Aegean expected to negatively affect the building stock in the Marmara Region? In the symposium, answers to such questions will be sought and the most up-to-date information obtained at the international level in the light of scientific data will be discussed by invited scientists and participating engineers and architects.

The aim of this program, which is one of the rare interactive events organized by the ITU Disaster Management Institute that brings together geoscientists and structural and earthquake engineers, is to address the current situation in a disciplined manner and to seek solutions for the future. The symposium, in which how the earthquake hazard in the Aegean Sea will affect Turkey and Greece in particular, how the building stock in the two neighboring countries can be made safer will be discussed from all aspects and solution proposals will be examined, will also be broadcast live on ITU's YouTube account on October 30, 2021.
