Visit to Our University from Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank

Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank: “As the Ministry, we will continue our close cooperation with ITU.”

During his visit to our Ayazağa Campus, Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank received information about the work carried out at our University. Varank visited our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu in his office, where he also met our Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Bülent İnanç, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Kızıl, Prof. Dr. Şule Itır Satoğlu, and Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata.

Visits to ITU’s Research and Application Centers

Making examination of Turkey’s first large scale cavitation tunnel (ITU CAT) designed and built at ITU Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Sciences, Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank received detailed information about the studies carried out at Ata Nutku Ship Model Testing Laboratory, Application and Research Center for Satellite Communications and Remote Sensing, Aerospace Technologies Application and Research Center, National Research Center on Membrane Technologies, and Nanotechnology Research Center.

Expressing that ITU is among Turkey’s brand universities, Minister Varank made the following statements after his visit: “We discussed with our professor (ITU Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu) to make ITU a university that will both increase the quality of education and make more research that will make a worldwide impact in the upcoming period.”

Expressing that, as the Ministry of Industry and Technology, they will continue to work in close collaboration with ITU in order for the university to dedicate more time and facilities to R&D activities in the upcoming period, Varank continued as follows:

“One of Turkey’s major techno parks is here. We went over what ITU will do in terms of techno parks in the upcoming period, over the plans for the next period. R&D is very important. The way to increase the added value of Turkish economy is to invest more in R&D. This can of course be done together with R&D centers and universities. Aerospace Technologies Application and Research Center, where we are now, is one of the research centers that carry out very important projects and bring significant funding from EU to our country. Here our young friends are making preparations for the competitions they will attend in the upcoming period. They achieved great success at TEKNOFEST previously. They are preparing for achieving worldwide success in the future.”

“Studies started at ITU for deep space mission”

Our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu expressed that they are making a study for deep space mission together with the Turkish Space Agency, and said that establishment of an operation center of the Turkish Space Agency is on the agenda.

Koyuncu said, “We have already started working on this subject. We signed a protocol with the Turkish Space Agency under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Technology. We will start seeing the results in the upcoming period.” Expressing that there is a large number of centers at the University, Koyuncu stated that important studies such as mini UAV’s and CubeSats are being carried out at the aerospace center, they were currently in.

Mentioning ITU National Research Center on Membrane Technologies, Koyuncu said, “At this center, various studies for producing national and domestic technologies are being carried out on filters for recycling waste water, especially treatment of seawater. We are an R&D university. Research is a must for us. In the upcoming period, as the Technical University, we will continue to add value to the R&D ecosystem of our country.”

The Minister received information from students about their projects

Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank came together with students who obtained championships in TEKNOFEST Competition and showed close interest in their projects. Wishing success to the teams that will attend TEKNOFEST, Varank finished his visit by having photos taken with ITU student project teams.
