The Vector Institute is known as an institute in the field of AI founded in Toronto with government support, with a significant R&D budget. Researchers appointed to the institute, whose Chief Scientific Advisor is Geoffrey Hinton, the holder of 2018 Turing award, which is considered the Nobel prize in computer sciences, conduct studies in the fields of deep learning, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Researchers are evaluated and selected according to the strength of their research contributions and the alignment of their areas of interest with the vision, mission and research strength of the Vector Institute.

Vector Institute faculty affiliates play an important role in knowledge generation, research, development and diversification in the local AI community and work with the industry with which their fields of interests are aligned. The researchers have the opportunity to host activities such as networking events, workshops, summer schools and seminars in related topics, and participate in Vector’s programs.

Among the new faculty affiliates, there are key figures from institutions across the province including St. Michael's Hospital, University Health Network, Krembil Center for Neuroinformatics, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and Queens, McMaster, York, Ottawa and Toronto Universities.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melike Erol Kantarcı focuses on AI-enabled 5G and 6G technologies

Our graduate Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melike Erol Kantarcı, one of the 2.285 Canada Research Chairs chosen from research and education institutes across the country as part of a permanent program created by the Government of Canada in 2000, conducts studies in the fields of wireless networks, 5G wireless communication and networks, smart grid and electric vehicles, cybersecurity, wireless sensor networks, wireless energy transfer, and underwater sensor networks. With her recent work on very high volume data processing with resource allocation in wireless systems, minimum delay and self optimization of networks, Erol Kantarcı will contribute to the world of science and technology in developing networks for autonomous vehicles, smart grid technology, systems working with wireless power and health services. Additionally, she is designing algorithms for 6G technology in order to take wireless networks to the next level. University of Ottawa, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melike Erol Kantarcı is also the founding director of Networked Systems and Communications Research (NETCORE) Laboratory.
